California State University Monterey Bay
Fall 2019-Fall 2021
Major: Collaborative Health and Human Services
Interdisciplinary concentration on Social Work and Public Health. Through the major I was placed in an internship with Catholic Charities and completed 240 hours in one year. This internship provided great insight of what tasks are done in the health and human services.
Internship
Fall 2020-Fall 2021
Agency: Catholic Charities Diocese of Monterey
Student intern with Catholic Charities Diocese of Monterey in their Family Supportive Services branch. Providing assistance with CalFresh applications, diaper distributions, and drive thru events in the county. Created a variety of flyers for the different events the agency would have to promote in the different social medias accounts the agency has. I was able to participate and help in multiple outreach events to promote the different services offered in the agency. Learned more about non-profit agencies such as with budgets, excel sheets for inventory and/or data, and learning how to communicate professionally through email and phone with staff, clients and other agencies.
Capstone Project: Drive-thru Resource Fair for Spanish-Speaking
November 2021
Abstract:
The agency chosen for the internship was Catholic Charities Diocese of Monterey under its Family Supportive Services branch. The problem addressed is that not enough Spanish speakers are accessing services. This is an issue that can lead to disadvantages that can affect the living conditions and quality of life of Spanish-speakers in Monterey County. The contributing factors to the issue are the staff demographics that do not reflect the community, communication barriers with clients, the process of accessing services is difficult to navigate, and difficulties with technology access in regards to the internet and access to computers. As a consequence, the risk of homelessness increases, health issues, and the lack of access to healthy food. The capstone project consists of a resource fair drive-thru event on the east side of Salinas. The drive-thru resource fair had different agencies who have staff and information in Spanish in order to advertise their services and for the Spanish-speaking community to learn about services that they can benefit from.

Undergraduate Researcher
California State University Monterey Bay
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) Koret Scholar January 2021-December 2021 Research Abstract: Reproductive health is a sensitive and controversial subject for many individuals to discuss openly with others. Within this subject, the topic of abortion has been and has stayed as controversial throughout the years by society and the government. Restrictions regarding abortions can be constantly found in courts at the state and federal level. For the many women who take the difficult decision to have an abortion, they often find themselves with barriers to access one. This is a difficult and draining process to the body and mind where these barriers only make it more challenging for these women to receive the care they need. To answer the question of barriers and what is impacting women in order to receive an abortion, qualitative research will be performed. This will be achieved via peer-review articles by compiling the data and information found by other researchers to have a clearer understanding of common barriers overall regardless of the women's age, race and ethnicity. |
